My brother and I founded Multipure on December 7, 1970, which means that we are celebrating Multipure’s 48th year of providing cleaner water for better health.

There have been a lot of changes in the last 48 years. In 1970, the United States population was 203 million; today, the population is 326 million – an increase of 160%. There are 123 million additional people who can benefit from a Multipure Drinking Water System in their home. And because of this, the opportunity is greater today than it was in 1970.

Back in 1970, we did not have fax machines or the Internet, let alone social media. Back then, we communicated by snail mail and by word of mouth; we literally knocked on doors to look for prospects. Bottled water was delivered in 5-gallon glass bottles, and only about 1 in 10 people used bottled water. In fact, the only bottled water sold in the supermarket was distilled bottled water for use in irons.

Today, the Internet offers instant communication, and bottled water is consumed by so many Americans that plastic bottle waste has created a Texas-sized sea of plastics floating in the Pacific Ocean. So much plastic has entered our environment that plastic fibers have been found in 83% of the world’s tap water; worse, plastic fibers have been found in 90% of bottled water.

In 1970, people were concerned about the smell, taste, and odor (i.e., chlorine) of their tap water. Back then, this was the primary reason people bought bottled water. Back then, we grew our business by showing consumers how they could obtain better water, at greater convenience, and for a lot less money than bottled water.

By the 1980s, people started becoming aware of the many contaminants found in their tap water – contaminants like lead, TTHMs, VOCs, asbestos, and many, many others. People also started becoming aware of the adverse health effects caused by these contaminants. The growing concern about drinking tap water created a tremendous market for both bottled water and drinking water filters.

As a result of the concerns about tap water, the President’s Cancer Panel warned people not to drink tap water unless it has been filtered by a carbon filter. The Silent Spring Institute and Harvard School of Public Health reinforced this advice, warning people as well to avoid drinking tap water unless it has been filtered by a carbon block filter.

All of the concerns regarding tap water and contamination has created an incredible opportunity for the water filtration industry, which in turn has created an incredible opportunity for Multipure. And as much as things have changed since 1970, much still remains the same. People still want cleaner water. People still want better health. People still want a chance for success.

Multipure has enjoyed great success for the past 48 years. However, we could not have been successful without our loyal Builders and customers. So, I want to thank all of you for your continued support and loyalty to Multipure. As we enter our 49th year and the upcoming Holiday Season, I would like to wish you a very warm holiday, a very happy New Year’s Day, and a prosperous 2019 and beyond.

There is no better gift than good health. By sharing Multipure with everyone you know, you are giving people the gift of better water and better health.
