A VERY interesting article hit cyberspace this week on www.wowOwow.com, identifying a class of chemicals in your water that can make you fat!

On May 11, the White House announced it was targeting a new threat to America’s health and security. It wasn’t some rogue nation or terrorist organization, or a newfound disease or environmental threat, but endocrine-disrupting chemicals, or EDCs. Great.

Scientists have coined a new term for these chemicals — "obesogens" — because they "may promote weight gain and obesity." They’re natural and synthetic compounds, and many of these chemicals work by mimicking estrogen — the very hormone that doctors DON’T want women taking anymore (as a large clinical trial linked hormone therapy to increased risk of heart disease, breast cancer, stroke, blood clots and abnormal mammograms).

"Obesogens are thought to act by hijacking the regulatory systems that control body weight," says Frederick vom Saal, Ph.D., curators’ professor of biological sciences at the University of Missouri. That’s why endocrine disruptors are so good at making us fat — and that’s why diet advice doesn’t always work — because even strictly following the smartest traditional advice won’t lower your obesogen exposure. See, an apple a day may have kept the doctor away 250 years ago when Benjamin Franklin included the phrase in his almanac. But if that apple comes loaded with obesity-promoting chemicals — nine of the ten most commonly used pesticides are obesogens, and apples are one of the most pesticide-laden foods out there — then Ben’s advice is way out of date.

We can reverse the obesogen effect if we simply adopt these four simple laws of leanness:

What's in YOUR drinking water?

There's good news and there's bad news. Which would you like first? Ok, we'll start with the bad news...

Research presented on July 14 at the International Conference on Emerging Infectious Diseases indicated that hospitalizations for common waterborne diseases cost the U.S. healthcare system as much as $539 million annually, according to a press release.

Using data from a large insurance claims database between 2004 and 2007, Michael Beach of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and his colleagues estimated the hospitalization cost of several common waterborne diseases in the United States, including cryptosporidiosis and giardiasis.

Total estimated costs for hospitalization for the diseases were $154-539 million, including $44-147 million in direct government payments for Medicare and Medicaid.

"When people think about these diseases, they usually think of a simple case of diarrhea, which is a nuisance but quickly goes away. However, these infections can cause severe illness that often result in hospital stays of more than a week, which can quickly drive up health care costs," Beach says.

Other symptoms can include rashes, eye and ear infections and respiratory or neurological symptoms and can even be fatal.

“These cost data highlight that water-related diseases pose not only a physical burden to the thousands of people sickened by them each year, but also a substantial burden in healthcare costs, including direct government payments through Medicare and Medicaid,” said Beach.

Multi-Pure has been busy getting ready for our big 40th anniversary this December 7th! I've been rummaging through old boxes in the warehouse in search of archival material to help us celebrate our history and I found something fun I wanted to share with you today!

When Multi-Pure first began its network marketing distribution, a company theme song was also born. Alexander Rice, son of CEO and Founder H. Allen Rice, wrote an inspiring song entitled "Isn't It Time?" Alexander was just a young teenager when this song was produced. "There’s no shortage of advice. This statement is especially true for those of us in sales. Often, that advice can be chalked up to common sense, and sometimes it comes from experience. The following is an easy-to-swallow dose of both.

Some of you may have heard of Rhonda Abrams. She’s a syndicated columnist, reaching millions of readers through newspaper and online channels. Her specialty is providing business planning expertise, and let’s face it, Multi-Pure isn't just a hobby for you, but a business. I’ve had one of her columns posted up on the wall of my office for 7 years now, because I like it so much. I’m going to take that column and give it some good ol’ Multi-Pure mojo.

Sooner or later, you’re going to have to make a sale. Don’t beat yourself up about it though, sales is more of a craft than an art. It can be learned. Rhonda tells us that there are a few keys to successful sales:

Listen: No sales skill is more important than keeping your mouth shut. A great salesperson hears what customers want – their concerns and priorities. When calling on a customer, it’s tempting to start spewing out your sales pitch: “We have the most highly certified filter...blah blah blah” or “It costs pennies per gallon...blah blah blah” or “It’s the green alternative to bottled water...blah blah blah”.
