In terms of price versus production cost, bottled water puts Big Oil to shame.

As U.S. sales of bottled water decline, a report last Thursday finds that almost half of those in polyethylene terephthalate plastic bottles, better known by the initials PET, now come from municipal tap water.

Wendy Koch wrote an article in USA Today, explaining that filtered tap water makes up an increasing share of bottled water - rising from 32.7 percent in 2000 to 47.8 percent in 2009 - as the share of spring-sourced water declines, according to analysis of industry data by the nonprofit consumer advocacy group Food & Water Watch.

"These are the numbers the bottled water industry doesn't want you to see," Wenonah Hauter, the group's executive director says in a statement.

"More and more bottled water is basically the same product that flows from consumer taps, subsidized by taxpayer dollars then poured into an environmentally destructive package and sold for thousands of times its actual value," she says.

The industry's International Bottled Water Association did not immediately return calls seeking comment.

The data, which come from the Beverage Marketing Corp.n's annual report on bottled water, attribute the increase in tap-sourced water to Nestle Pure Life's switch from spring water to tap water in 2005. They also show that U.S. sales of bottled water increased sharply from 2002 to 2007 but have since fallen.

Multi-Pure is celebrating 40 years of improving people's health and wellness!

We have the most amazing distributors here at Multi-Pure. I just received this very sweet letter from Deanna DeLong, one of our former "National Distributor of the Year" award recipients:

"Dear Customers and Distributors,

I’d like to tell you about one of my most loved distributors. Her name is Dorothy Powell, and I met her for the first time when she was 85 years old. David’s brother, John Feinauer, sold her a filter. Dorothy was an amazing woman. She had scoliosis, and had a huge growth on her back, so she walked kind of hunched over. She always had a smile and never complained, even though she had constant pain. She wore a wig with brown hair, because she didn’t like her gray hair.

She had more enthusiasm than anyone I ever met! I went over to her house to help her change her filter and we began a friendship that lasted till she died at age 93. Dorothy was always having people over to her home. She’d offer a glass of water. “Isn’t that great water? Would you like to see why?” She would bring them into her kitchen and open the cabinet so that they could see the Multi-Pure. Next thing you know, she would be writing up an order!

She took a fall at age 90, and her daughter decided she should go into a retirement center. She called me, very distressed, because the water was terrible. I went over and we tried to hook up a countertop unit in her bathroom, but couldn’t because there were no threads on the sink. For six months, every week I brought her water, until finally they changed out the faucet so that we could hook up her Multi-Pure.

The week after we hooked it up, she called to inform me that she had another sale. Her next door neighbor, who was 85, wasn’t drinking enough water and Dorothy had been giving her water every day. She finally convinced her that she needed to buy one. I went out and we hooked up a filter for her friend Helen. That was six years ago. Helen is still alive at 91, and I go change her filter every year.

What's in YOUR water?

Wow! I just received the following letter and photo from one of our terrific independent distributors, Sue Anderson. Read what she had to say:

This picture was taken January. 2010. (A new filter is on the left and a used filter is on the right.) The dirty filter is after one year of use. The customer wanted to use the cartridge for a year. We, of course, suggested - and they agree - it will be replaced more often!

The Multi-Pure filter was inside a countertop water cooler in a City of Portland office breakroom in a newer building...amazing! The employees on this particular floor had organized a "water club". Those who participate chip in to help pay for the water cooler. They were spending $100/month for rental of a cooler and the purchase/delivery of LOTS of 5 gallon bottled water. Those who are not in the water club either buy bottled water or drink from the tap.

Needless to say, they are spending MUCH, MUCH less now, with more convenient, better quality water. Three of the employees purchased the cooler and they are renting the filter. I had worked out a rental agreement with them (prior to our new rental program).

A "water club" is a great suggestion for offices, etc. Folks can chip in to have great water for less!
